Wymondham Dementia Support Group was formed in 2008 and became a registered charity in 2011 with the objective of ‘Promoting the well-being and quality of life of people with dementia and their carers in the County of Norfolk’.
The principal activity of the Group was to establish a Pabulum Café in Wymondham modelled upon the successful ‘Alzheimer Cafés’ established in the Netherlands by Dr Biere Miesen a Clinical Psychologist to overcome the stigma surrounding dementia.
Dementia is an increasing problem for society. It is estimated that around one million people in the UK are living with dementia. In Norfolk alone, the estimated figure for people living with dementia in 2025 will exceed 18,900.
Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive disorders affecting the brain, symptoms including memory loss, mood changes, problems with communication and reasoning often combined with some physical problems. The most common types of dementia are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and frontotemporal dementia.
